Privacy Policy
Dictaro (“we”, “our”, or “us”) is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, and handle your information when you use the Dictaro application and related services.
Our Core Principle: Local-First Privacy
Dictaro is designed with a local-first architecture. Your audio recordings and transcribed text are processed on your own device and are never sent to, stored on, or accessible by Dictaro’s servers.
Information We Collect
Account Information (Pro Users Only)
When you create an account to subscribe to Dictaro Pro, we collect:
- Email address and name from your chosen OAuth provider (Google, GitHub, or Microsoft) for account identification
- No passwords are stored — authentication is handled entirely by your OAuth provider
Billing Information (Pro Users Only)
- Payment processing is handled entirely by Stripe
- We store a Stripe Customer ID to associate your subscription with your account
- We do not store credit card numbers, bank account details, or other payment credentials
- Stripe’s privacy practices are governed by Stripe’s Privacy Policy
Information We Do NOT Collect
Dictaro explicitly does not collect, store, transmit, or access:
- Audio recordings — all audio is processed locally on your device
- Transcribed text — transcription results remain on your device
- Keystroke data — Dictaro does not log or monitor keystrokes
- Screen content — Dictaro does not capture or access screen content
- Usage telemetry or analytics — we do not track how you use the application
- Device identifiers — we do not fingerprint or uniquely identify your device
- Location data — we do not access or store your location
Audio Processing
Local Mode (Default)
In local mode, Dictaro uses the Whisper speech recognition model running entirely on your device. Audio is:
- Captured from your microphone
- Processed by the local Whisper model
- Converted to text on your device
- Immediately discarded after transcription
No audio data ever leaves your machine.
Server Mode
If you configure Dictaro to use a remote ASR server, audio is sent to the server address you specify. Dictaro does not operate, control, or have access to your server. The privacy practices of your self-hosted server are your responsibility.
AI Text Processing (Pro Feature, BYOK)
Dictaro Pro’s AI text cleanup feature uses a Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) model:
- You provide your own API key from your chosen AI provider (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic)
- Transcribed text is sent directly from your device to your chosen AI provider
- Dictaro’s servers are never involved in this communication
- Your text is subject to your AI provider’s privacy policy and terms of service
- We do not see, store, or have access to your transcribed or processed text
Data Storage on Your Device
Dictaro stores the following data locally on your computer:
- Settings:
%AppData%\Roaming\dictaro\settings.json— your configuration preferences - Authentication tokens: Stored in Windows Credential Manager — encrypted JWT tokens for Pro account access
- Logs:
%AppData%\Local\dictaro\— application logs for troubleshooting (contain no audio or text data)
Third-Party Services
| Service | Purpose | Data Shared |

Data Retention
- Account data: Retained while your account is active. Deleted upon account deletion request.
